The fangs beneath the wool

for my final year project for my diploma in nanyang academy of fine arts, i've decided to tackle the growing global social issue of online predators/grooming.

As digital spaces become more central to youth socialisation, the difficulty of identifying who is behind the screen has grown. I am driven to translate these complex social issues into accessible, narrative-driven allegories.

My focus is using visual storytelling to communicate sensitive topics in an empowering way, fostering a safer and more aware digital environment for the next generation.

this project was later then exhibited in nafa's grad expectations 2026 on the 12th of may 2026 to 19th of may 2026.

pitch video

this project consists of a main deliverable, transmedia and project website.

Below is a pitch video that will run you through the components of the project.

Animated short film

The main deliverable of this project is an animated short film set in a fantasy game world. The story follows a rabbit who meets a friendly sheep and agrees to complete quests together. As the interaction progresses, the sheep gradually gains the rabbit’s trust before leading them into a more private and uncomfortable situation. Through allegory, visual tension, and game-inspired elements, the film encourages youths to recognise emotional red flags, trust their instincts, and disengage from unsafe online interactions.

EXHIBITION

For my transmedia, i've decided to create a mock up exhibition that is created using sketchup and rendered with d5 render.

The exhibition extends the animated short into an immersive forest environment where visitors move through a series of interactive stations. These include a reflective pond reveal, a QR-linked AI chat encounter, and a display that exposes the hidden meanings behind seemingly harmless messages. Together, these installations transform the project’s message into a physical and participatory journey, allowing audiences to experience hidden danger, interaction, and recognition within the exhibition space.

floorplan

on the left of this image is the floorplan of the exhibition, and on the right are the different components within the exhibition.

before entering the exhibition, visitors will get to view the animation for context.

then, they will walk through 3 different interactables.

towards the end of the exhibition, visitors will be given 3d printed keychains as memorable pieces for their experience. there is also a photo taking wall where visitors can take photos for keepsake.

The first interactable is a reflective pond, when visitors step onto the stairs, a playback will begin and as they glimpse into the pond, a figure will appear behind their reaction, to simulate that sometimes things could hide in plain sight, yet we would not notice.

the second interactable is a ai powered chatbot. the chatbot is equipped with a friendly looking animal character, and presets of conversations.

The chatbot would either pretend to be someone with ill intent, or could be completely innocent.

visitors would scan the qr code on the display and begin a chat with the interactable, which they will be given a risk assessment at the end of the chat.

the third interactable is a display that portrays real world messages.

when visitors tap on any of the messages, the display animates and shows the hidden intents behind these messages.

3D-printed recycled keychains are distributed at the exit booth as QR-linked takeaways.
